Maureen McLaughlin 2013- 2014 President of the International Reading Association (IRA)
Maureen McLaughlin is a professor of reading education and chairperson of the Reading Department at East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania. She earned her doctorate at Boston University in reading and language development. Prior to her tenure at the University, Maureen spent fifteen years as a classroom teacher, reading specialist, and department chair in a public school system.
Maureen is the President-Elect of the International Reading Association and will serve as President in 2013 - 2014. She served as a member of the Board of Directors of the International Reading Association from 2005 – 2008 and received the International Reading Association’s Outstanding Teacher Educator in Reading Award in 2010. Maureen is the author of numerous journal articles, chapters, and books. Her titles include The Common Core: Teaching Grade K - 5 Students to Meet the Reading Standards (IRA, 2013), The Common Core: Teaching Students in Grades 6 -12 to Meet the Reading Standards (IRA, 2013), Guided Comprehension in the Primary Grades (IRA 2010), Guided Comprehension for English Learners (IRA 2012),Guided Comprehension in Grades 3 – 8 (2009), and Content Area Reading: Teaching and Learning in an Age of Multiple Literacies (2010).
A frequent speaker at international, national, and state conferences, Maureen is a consultant to school districts and universities throughout the world. Her research interests include reading comprehension, critical literacy, and the Common Core State Standards.
